Stressed-out students at a Beitou District (北投) elementary school in Taipei will be able to put their best foot forward now that a hot spring foot spa opened on the school grounds on Monday.
The hot spring pool, which will also serve as a teaching facility, is the unique perk now being offered at Hushan Elementary School (湖山國小) in Beitou, one of Taiwan’s best-known hot spring centers.
School principal Her Yi-chun (何怡君) said the outdoor hot spring pool — a first at a school in Taiwan — was the result of test hot spring water wells drilled by the city’s Department of Economic Development in the area last year.
School authorities noticed that hot spring water regularly bubbled up to the surface through the small test well.
They discovered that 100 tonnes of 40˚C water from a carbonic spring with fairly neutral PH readings rose to the surface every day, Her said. The school elected to turn the area into a place where students could relax.
Taipei City Education Department Director Wu Ching-shan (吳清山), who presided over the opening ceremony on Monday, said the foot spa would be open to the public on holidays.
